Descriptions
SALSA
Salsa
is a dance for Salsa music created by Spanish speaking people from the
Caribbean and their immigrant communities in the US. Salsa dancing mixes
African and European dance influences through the music and dance fusions
that are the roots of Salsa.
ARGENTINE TANGO
Argentine tango is
danced in an embrace that can vary from very open, in which leader and
follower connect at arms length, to very closed, in which the connection is
chest-to-chest, or anywhere in between.
Close embrace is often associated with the more traditional styles,
while open embrace leaves room for many of the embellishments and figures
that are associated with tango nuevo
LINE DANCE
A
line dance is
choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of
people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of
the individuals, all facing the
same direction, and
executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical
contact with each other.
BALLROOM WORKOUT
If you want to
shape up while having a lot of fun, the ballroom workout class is for you!
The ballroom
workout class is a full body workout using
ballroom dances, technique and music to get in shape and improve your
dancing. Dancing is the workout equivalent of hiding your kid’s medicine in
their applesauce. You get so involved, have so much fun, and continuously
progress with every passing practice session that you hardly realize you’re
working out at all. Wear clothing you can move in.
NIGHT CLUB 2-STEP
Initially
developed by Buddy Schwimmer in the mid-1960s. The dance is also known as
"Two Step" and was "one of the most popular forms of contemporary
social dance" as a Disco Couples Dance in 1978. It is
frequently danced to mid-tempo ballads in 4/4 time that have a
characteristic Quick-Quick-Slow beat. A classic example is the song
Lady In Red.
SHAG
A swing dance done mostly to moderate tempo music (100-150 bpm). During the
dance the upper body and hips hardly move as the legs do convoluted kicks
and
fancy footwork. The lead is the center of attention, and the
follower’s steps either mirror the lead's or mark time while the lead shows
off with spins and other gyrations. Carolina Shag is the state dance of
North Carolina and South Carolina, and is still popular amongst residents of
both states.
BACHATA
A style of dance that accompanies the music of the same name. It has its
origins in the Dominican Republic. The dance is a four step beat achieved
with a walking Cuban hip motion, and a unique “pop”. The dance is performed
both in
open position and in closed position depending on the setting and
mood of the partners. Similar to merengue, dips are not original to the
dance and turns are done infrequently. The male leads the female with subtle
communication using the hands to guide the direction in which to move or to
hint on upcoming turns.
